Attorney profile

Barbara S. Picard

Barbara focuses her practice on family law including child custody, visitation and support; divorce and equitable distribution; and prenuptial agreements. During an initial consultation, Barbara listens carefully to the history and dynamics of the people involved. She and her client will discuss the client’s goals in order to clarify what the client hopes to accomplish. She educates her client in the various processes available to them including litigation, mediation, collaboration, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. Although litigation might be the appropriate choice for some clients, other clients and their families may be better served with choosing less contentious processes.

Barbara also represents a highly respected group of automobile dealerships in Richmond and values that business relationship and what it brings to her practice.

Barbara was born and raised in New Castle, Pennsylvania. She earned her undergraduate degree with honors from Ohio Wesleyan University. She moved to Richmond in 1979 to attend T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. There she was a member of the Law Review and earned her Juris Doctorate in 1982. She began to practice law in Richmond; made it her home; and has never left. She has been married for over 35 years and has four children, two of whom are graduates of Fork Union Military Academy and two of whom attended Chesterfield County Public Schools.

Barbara is a founding member of the Collaborative Professionals of Richmond and is an active member of Richmond’s growing and active collaborative community. She is a member of the Metro Richmond Family Law Bar Association; the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar; and is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and before the United States District Courts. She was selected by her peers to be included among Virginia Legal Elite in Virginia Business Magazine for 2016.
